There is a hilarious website created by a guy named Chris Harper, about a fictional church called The Landover Baptist Church, at www.landoverbaptist.org. He makes the above statement in reference to the conflict between the “Christian” West and Islam, basically the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
There is often a lot of truth in humor and Mr. Harper makes a lot of good points. I particularly like the one about “the Invisible friend”. You can call it your “imaginary friend” or your “imaginary playmate”, but in essence, many wars are fought over religion and those that are not are often perceived as such, i.e., the “Christian” West vs. Islam.
This is a funny thing for a Deist to say, God is your invisible playmate. Didn’t I say I believed in God, but not religion? Not exactly.
As a Deist, I have concluded that there is a God/Intelligent Design, but I do not presume to have any exclusive communications with Him/Her/It and/or Them. I have come to this conclusion simply by observing nature and the universe. To me, it’s reasonable.
I say I have “concluded” that there is a God because to say I believe in God implies religious faith, which I do not have. I do not believe in any religion. I see no evidence that “God” or whoever is using any group as the exclusive way to salvation, there is no proof the Bible is from “God”, or that Jesus in fact ever lived. There is far more reliable historical evidence that Mohammed actually lived and that the accounts of his life are fairly accurate, but that doesn’t make me a Muslim
So no, I don’t “believe”, in a fervent religious way. I have concluded. I have also concluded that Honda’s are great cars, I also can say I believe Honda’s are great cars. You would say “what’s the difference”. Well, I don’t worship at the alter of the Almighty Accord, I don’t hate Toyota owners, I don’t kill or shun any of my family members if they buy a Chevy and I am not planning on crashing a plane into the Chrysler Building.
That being said, I have concluded that there is a God from lots of things I observe in nature. But I have not seen He/She/It or Them. So, by definition, I too have an invisible friend. Even though I have not seen Him, heard from Him, received any revelations from Him, I just have concluded He exists. Even as I type them, these words sound a bit naïve . But, I can’t let go of the God thing.
Incidentally, forgive me for being sexist by referring to God as ”He”, in the masculine. It’s that leftover Neanderthal gene. I can’t help it. Actually it’s a bit of laziness. Of the words, He/She/It or Them, He and It have only two letters and thus are easier to type. “It” seems a bit..oh, insulting or demeaning. I’m just playing it safe.
Hey, if the Christians are right, picture me, dead and standing in Heaven before the God of the Bible:
“So, Mr. Smarty Pants Blogger…you referred to me as IT?????”
“Well…sir…since we hadn’t actually met, I fell like I kinda have an excuse. By the way let me say how stunningly masculine you look on that Golden throne, with that cool beard!! Do you work out?”
On second thought, if the Christians are right, I would be standing before Satan, in Hell.
“So” his evil voice booms in a mocking tone “You called God “It”? HHHAAAAAAAAAA……(evil, echoing laugh)
But I would have to ask, “So, Lucifer if you are the most wicked creature and the exact opposite of God, why do get to have an eternity of fun, torturing guys like me? The message here is that crime does pay”
I have never been one for diplomacy, even when talking to the King of the Damned and facing eternal torment.
But the point here is God is invisible. Oh, all the Holy Books speak of their particular God(s) as appearing to, talking to, having sex with (yes, that’s true) humans. Only, I have never seen him. If I step in a pile of dog shit, I can say, without fear of contradiction that, at some point in the past, a dog was here. I don’t see the Dog, but as I am picking his shit out of the tread of my running shoes, I have no doubt that he was indeed here, at some point.
But I still haven’t seen him. And I want to. Religious people are desperate for even the slightest tangible, physical evidence of God.
For example, from Reuters, December 19, 1996:
“Hundreds flock to Virgin apparition on office tower”
CLEARWATER, Florida (Reuter) — Hundreds of people converged on Clearwater Wednesday to see what they believe is a vision of the Virgin Mary on an office building.
“God is giving us a sign,” said Sister Martin, a nun of the Order of Saint Anne in Bangalore, India.
The image, two floors high, first emerged last Thursday on the tinted windows of a finance company office. It glows and shimmers, turning from green to blue, to red, and there is a distinct outline of a head, a hooded robe and most of a torso.
Skeptics say it is caused by the sun reflecting off water left by sprinklers. But others believe it is a true miracle.
“God is telling us it is time to change our ways,” said Sister Christian of the same order. “(It) looks exactly like all the paintings of the Blessed Mother
And we also have this from CBS News, April 20, 2005:
“Faithful See Image of Virgin Mary”
Stain On Wall Of Chicago Underpass Believed To Be Image Of Mary
CHICAGO, April 20, 2005
A steady stream of the faithful and the curious, many carrying flowers and candles, have flocked to an expressway underpass for a view of a yellow and white stain on a concrete wall that some believe is an image of the Virgin Mary.
Police have patrolled the emergency turnoff area under the Kennedy Expressway since Monday as hundreds of people have walked down to see the image and the growing memorial of flowers and candles that surround it.
Beside the image is an artist’s rendering of the Virgin Mary embracing Pope John Paul II in a pose some see echoed in the stain.
“We believe it’s a miracle,” said Elbia Tello, 42. “We have faith, and we can see her face.”
Pathetic, really. These people want to believe so bad that they venerate stains on concrete and windows. What’s really pathetic is that God never gives us what we need, physical, undeniable evidence of his existence.
Where is God? Does this not prove that should God appear to the human race and speak a few words, he could stop a lot of suffering and answer a lot of burning questions that would put the question of his existence to rest? If he appeared every generation or so, life here on earth would be vastly different.
“Sure I believe in God! I saw him in 1958 and than in 1995. Everyone believes in God”
Still haven’t seen Him. It does not prove or disprove his existance. Like I said, as a Deist I have concluded that there is a God. but I do not presume to have any exclusive communications with Him/Her/It and/or Them. I have come to this conclusion simply by observing nature and the universe. To me, it’s just reasonable.
Not everyone shares my view, and I really don’t give a shit. I don’t claim to have the answers, just questions. I yearn to know what God really is and what he wants from us, like most people.
Apparently, the entity that has all the answer and who could easily settle all this controversy, isn’t talking.
