John 3:16, from the King James Version of the Bible:
“For god loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”
John 3:16, from the New World Translation of the Bible, the Jehovah’s Witness Bible:
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life
We’ve all seen assholes holding up signs at ball games with “John 3:16” plastered across it. As an aside, did you ever bother to look it up? I didn’t either, but I already knew what it said. Remember I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness and had the Bible jammed down my throat.
Further, we all know the story of how God sent Jesus to earth, the Jews killed him in a horrible way and God resurrected him and he is now presumable back in heaven. So today we have the Christmas and Easter holidays to commemorate this whole series of events.
Jesus was born, we have Christmas. We give gifts, sing holiday and have drunken parties, that often end in female nudity and wanton sex, all admittedly cool things. So then Jesus was killed and resurrected, we have Easter. Jesus was hung on a stake or cross, whichever you choose to believe as there is proof of neither. He died slowly, agonizingly, painfully. So we, in honor of all that celebrate all this by Easter egg hunts, giving kids Easter baskets and chocolate rabbits, but unfortunately not much female nudity and wanton sex.
But did you ever think about the way Jesus died? Now I don’t believe in the Bible and there is scant proof that Jesus ever lived, but humor me. They take this guy, and nail him through his hands and feet to the cross/stake. Then they hoist him and the stake/cross upright, his body weight supported and resting on the wounds in his hands and feet. He lives for a few hours in agonizing pain and then, for good measure the Roman guards attending him break his legs and pierce his side with a sword.
Have you bible thumpers ever thought of it that way? Likely not. This manner of death was quit common in those days, in fact the Romans and other civilizations had many equally horrible ways to kill people. Look it up.
But the real question for Bible believers is what is the point of this whole exercise? Because “God loved the world” so by sending Jesus to earth, to die such an ignominious death, he demonstrated that love.
I’m sorry, but I don’t get it. When I was a kid, my mother showed she loved me when she gave me a cookie. My kids and grandkids give me pictures, ties and other stuff. I like e-books, so my family gives me those as gifts to show they love me or at least because they feel some obligation to get me a gift.
If my neighbor, one day, dragged his kid over to my front lawn and yelled to me “This is for you because I love you” and shot his kid in the head, I don’t think that would please, benefit or even entertain me.
But that’s what Christians say God did. Maybe I’m missing something, but after giving this a lot of thought, I don’t get it. I would think that God had a lot of much more less gruesome ways to prove “he loved us”. Christians believe He gave us all life itself. That’s a pretty cool thing. Killing your Son is perhaps pushing the envelope. Again, a cookie would do, but no. As in all religion and as in the Bible we are presented with things that make no sense in any context.
The Jesus/Crucifixion thing has been ingrained into us so much simply by the exposure we get from living in a Judeo/Christian Society, most of us never stop to think of the logic involved. But again, it makes no sense.
Oh the Bible gives us some justification, “a perfect life for a perfect life”. This is what the Witnesses say at any rate. Adam, was perfect when he sinned, so a perfect man had to be sacrificed or give his life at what the witnesses call a “corresponding ransom”. Adam sinned, so we all inherited sin, Jesus died to make up for Adams screw up.
So, when does all humanity benefit from Jesus death? We all sure caught hell when Adam sinned, but guess what? You have to “believe in Jesus” to get the benefit of his death. I don’t believe in Jesus, so I don’t get invited to the “sin be gone” party. Fuck, I don’t believe in Adam, but I sure “inherited his imperfection” and am going to die/go to hell as a result of his fuck up. Somehow, this doesn’t seem fair. But hey, we’re talking religion! Nothing makes and sense or in any way can be considered fair.
So, who made that idiotic rule up? Apparently God. But the question remains, does God answer to anyone? Doesn’t he make the rules? Would anyone who believed in God have question a more humane less gruesome “method” of “saving” us?
The Bible is full of this “blood” stuff. The fucking Jews were obsessed with blood. In the Old Testament at the Jewish temple they had a twelve foot in diameter bowl full of blood. Look it up. They did a lot of wierd stuff with blood, like sprinkling it on different thinks for no apparent logical reason. Oh yea, and if your kid pissed you off you could have him stoned to death.
As for “the ranson” it’s a stupid fucking rules that in Jesus case resulted in a brutal execution of a human being for no real reason. It doesn’t make sense in any context.
In reality, I don’t believe in the Bible and don’t think any of this bullshit happened, but if so, is it too late for God to hand out cookies?

I’m not gunna hide the fact that I’m a Christian. So before you completely close your mind to whatever I have to say, try to listen openly. First off, many people who call themselves Christians are extremely close-minded and have no firm theological to base their faith on, so they really are brain-washed. You can rip there arguments apart all you want, but PLEASE don’t accept posts from those people as a guideline to base every Christian off of. Now, all anti-Christians out there, LISTEN UP: I am a Christian and I do NOT believe that the Bible is scientifically accurate. That would be ridiculous (despite the fact that many Christians still make this claim). To claim that the Bible is inerrant (no scientific or detailed inaccuracy) is to impose a modern standard on an ancient writing. The Bible, which WAS WRITTEN BY HUMANS (yes, Christians believe that, too) was not meant to be 100% accurate in all of its details, but rather to be INFALLIBLE. This means that the main purpose of the Bible is to teach people about God and to change them through their encounter with him through scripture.
Also, there are many Christians that believe in evolution as well. In fact, most educated Christians do. So STOP THINKING THAT CHRISTIANITY AND EVOLUTION ARE OPPOSITES. They are not.
One more thing, I feel like most people who write these posts are pretty close-minded anyways, but please please PLEASE do your research before you write-off Christianity as a bullcrap. And I don’t mean to just talk to one or two Christians about what they believe. Actually find some Christian writing from a respected author and read it, THEN you can argue it away all you want. I would refer you to read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and also The Reason for God by Timothy Keller. Obviously, they are written by Christians, but give them a chance and then if you still think Christianity is stupid then at least you’ll be well-informed.
One more disclaimer: You don’t have to believe in a literal Hell to be a Christian, either. I, as well as many other Christians, don’t believe that God would send people to a place to be tortured and in pain for eternity.
Feel free to email me if you have a question or want me to clarify anything. Thanks if you actually read this entire post.

Blah, blah

Just because Gods’ claim that the crucifixion of Jesus is an act of “love” for mankind doesn’t make “sense” to you, we should throw our hands up in the air and cry “bullshit?”
Does it make sense that the sky was made to appear blue? How about feet…why the fuck do they have 5 toes and not 8? Why is the earth round instead oblong? Why one moon instead of 90?
I fail to follow the value of you not making sense of the murder of Christ on the cross being an act of love. Who gives a flying fuck what makes sense to you or not?
There are so many unknowns in this life…how did it all begin, how do gravity and electricity work, what magically happens when 2 cells meet and a human life takes form, why do the oceans not sweep over the land masses, how can a humming bird wing flap up to 5400 times/minute and not self destruct etc ??
So we have this “holy” book that explains it all so that a child can understand. Jesus says hid Father, God sent Him down, hung out as a human for awhile and then got whacked. If we believe the “story’ we go to a groovy place called Heaven. If we blow it off, we suffer the “second” death and get obliterated in a hot place called Hell. What’s so fucking unreasonable about the entire presentation? You think it’s all bullshit, nobody is twisting your arm, dude.
I’m going with the hope that it’s not bullshit and that our eyes will be “opened” (at sometime) to the full Glory that Jesus says will be revealed to us once we leave this reality.

You have such a “non arguement” proving you wrong would bore me to tears.
What a fucking asshole.
January 11, 2011 at 2:56 pm |
Actually, 8 toes would be cool. Can you do that?
January 10, 2011 at 6:59 pm |
“how do gravity and electricity work”? Wow.
Anyway. Isnt easter and the egg to celebrate when he was resurected and not his death a couple of days earlier?
Just a thought. A great read otherwise. Typicaly followed by people posting nonsense.

“how do gravity and electricity work?”. Good question. We use both and still do not understand fully how either works.
Everyday, we learn things that simply prove how little we know. There is more proof that gravity and electricity exist than that Jesus was an actual historic figure and that the Bible is from God.

clarifying the reason you believe that Jesus died:
you believe he died just because “he loves us”
it’s much deeper.
In Genesis it seen that God told Adam and Eve that they would die if they ate of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil… ever since that day that they ate people have been dying… when you are born… you are headed toward death.
Jesus died to save us from death. this is where the love lies. It’s not just, “I love you I will kill myself to show you this” … it’s “you made a mistake, you’re supposed to be punished for this, but I will take that punishment for you because I love you”
I am not a Jehovah Witness… I actually think that they have very cult based beliefs but I do believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died to save me from eternal death. I believe every word that the Bible says and nothing else that people have added to it because that is all only OPINION. I am very leery of people who claim to receive a “new” revelation from the Lord. He is the same yesterday today and forever, why would he give a “new” thing?
I’m begging you to please consider this from a new viewpoint. Jesus did not die because he loves you and just was suicidal. He died because you are dying, you are sick… spiritually. He came in and intervened. I am so sorry that you’ve had bad experiences with church. You don’t need church. You need a relationship. You need a relationship with God. But you first have to realize that you need it. You have to realize that you are dying and if you do not accept that fact you will face the judgement that God told Adam that we are to face… eternal death- meaning hell.
If you gave your life fully to Jesus, He would use you mightily to come against the luke-warmness and the half-hearted converts who serve Jesus only when there’s a catastrophe.
May 14, 2011 at 3:01 am |
Lol! Wow. It amazes me how many people so ignorantly and blindly believe that Jesus wasn’t a historical figure. It’s called history dude, look it up. The Bible is the most historically and scientifically supported book in the world. You do know archaeology is a science right?
Now, I can understand your confusion as to why Jesus died on the cross – coming from a JW back ground and all. There is a major flaw in their belief that leaves a pretty major gap in understanding – JW’s don’t believe that Jesus is God. If Jesus isn’t God the cross doesn’t make sense – It’s like your neighbor shooting his kid. The Bible teaches, and history backs up, that Jesus claimed to be God (and did all the miracles to prove it). Jesus died on the cross WILLINGLY to take the punishment that we all deserve for turning our backs on God. Jesus was the wronged party, not just some innocent bystander. An analogy would be a courtroom judge handing down a sentence but then stepping down, taking off his robes and wig, and serving the sentence for you… except its even more than that because the Judge is also the one who was wronged! That is why the Cross show’s us God’s love – so much more than any cookie could. But it is more than just symbol of love, it is the means by which the punishment for sins is paid so that those who accept it can be forgiven. How about you read a gospel for yourself and try to come at it from an unbiased perspective? A neutral and default position by the way is one of not knowing – not one of believing the opposite because that is what you want to believe.
